Under the coordination of TÜRSAB’s Cultural Tourism Specialization Department, a panel titled “Yenikapı Shipwrecks: The World’s Largest Collection of Medieval Ships” was held at TÜRSAB Central Office.
The panel, moderated by Cultural Tourism Specialization President Hakan Çokgezen, featured Prof. Dr. Ufuk Kocabaş, Head of the Department of Underwater Cultural Heritage Conservation at Istanbul University, as a speaker.
The event was attended by Board of Directors members Kıvanç Meriç and Özgür Ildır Öksüz, Disciplinary Committee President İbrahim Tanrıverdi, Audit Committee Member Yüksel Türemez, Boğaziçi RRB President Aşkın Kördal, Fatih RRB President Okan Cem Başusta, TOAR President Erdal Çeri, and Gastronomy Tourism Specialization President M. Tümay İmamoğlu, School Tours Committee President Ferhat Günbay, Deputy President of the Cultural Tourism Specialization Committee İlker Horozcu, and our Deputy President of the Gastronomy Tourism Specialization Committee Cem Balsun.
During the panel, the significance of the Yenikapı Shipwrecks—unearthed during the Marmaray and metro projects—for the history of world maritime affairs was discussed. Comprehensive information was shared regarding Byzantine-era maritime trade, ship technologies, and archaeological research, based on the shipwrecks discovered at Theodosius Harbor, Istanbul’s historic port, which constitute the world’s largest collection of medieval ships. The event, which featured discussions on the preservation of cultural heritage, the contribution of scientific research to tourism, and the international significance of the Yenikapı Shipwrecks, concluded after participants’ questions were answered.
We would like to thank all our guests and members who attended the event.
